Mars is a cold, bleak wasteland, with very thin air that we Earthlings could never breathe. However, many of the pictures our telescopes, orbiters, and rovers have sent back show signs that liquid water might have been on the surface of Mars long ago. Also, we can see ice caps at the north and south poles.
All these signs of water are very exciting. Why? Because on Earth, almost everywhere there is water, there is life. Whether the water is boiling hot or frozen, some sort of creature seems to thrive in it. Is it the same on other planets? If water once flowed on Mars, did life once thrive there too? Or, maybe there is still water on Mars, only it has gone underground. Could there be tiny life forms—like bacteria—on Mars even now?
Why are some people against space exploration?
Because they think that it is a waste of money and time. And they argue that we should find immediate solutions to help us directly.
What has space exploration done for food production?
The satellites record data on land and weather patterns. After careful analysis of the data, the scientists can provide useful recommendations and advice for farmers.
Countries around the globe are spending billions of dollars and lots of time on various space missions, whether to Mars or other planets much further away. Some people argue that we should stop wasting time and money exploring space. Instead, we should feed the world’s poor and find immediate solutions to other problems, such as pollution and fatal diseases. However, others feel this is a shallow view much fails to realize how exploring space help us.
A. There are a lot of unsolved mysteries on Earth. So why are we going into space to explore?
B. It is necessary to find a new home for people in space, as the resources on Earth will run out.
C. I cannot understand spending all this money on expensive research and experiments when so many people need food.
D. Exploring space encourages scientists to improve technology that can help people in other ways, too.
