1 ripe fruit or crops are fully grown and ready to eat [反:unripe]
eg. Those tomatoes aren't ripe yet.
2 be ripe for sth: to be ready for a change to happen, esp when it should have happened sooner
eg. The police forces are ripe for reform.
3 the time is ripe (for sth): used to say it is a very suitable time for sth to happen, esp when it should have happened sooner
eg. The time is ripe for a review of progress up to now.
Perhaps there is an element of truth in both these pictures, but few of us have had the opportunity to find out.
